Simon Peter was devastated, downtrodden, and discouraged at what had taken place with his Messiah Jesus and upset at his own actions too. Just after Jesus’ crucifixion, death and resurrection.
Then we can read chapter 21 of book of John that Jesus comes to the disciples after they decided to return to fishing to their trade. This was the third time Jesus appeared after He was crucified and rose from the dead.
In verses 3 and 4, the disciples boarded their boat to fish all night but caught nothing. This illustrates how human leadership is prone to error and how plans often fail to unfold according to our own intentions. It reveals that we all lack the wisdom of service and the leadership skills necessary to properly accomplish even simple tasks. As they faced the morning their sound judgment and clear thinking clouded by human thoughts, a sense of futility, and disappointment they failed to recognize Jesus standing on the shore. When Jesus asked, do you have any meat?” They responded “No!” Then Jesus told them, “To cast their net on the right side of the boat”. They cast the net as instructed, and the catch was so massive that they were unable to haul it in. It was only then that Peter, the disciple whom Jesus loved, exclaimed, “It is the Lord.”
Here, we witness the disciples’ weak faith as they abandoned the mission Jesus had entrusted to them to return to fishing for worldly necessities, as well as the frailty that prevented them from recognizing the Messiah, Jesus while they were downtrodden, and in a state of discouragement and dejection. We also see the human heart revealed: having forgotten the importance of their ministry, they finally recognized Jesus only after He enabled them to make a miraculous catch of fish. Peter, having recognized Jesus, once again demonstrated the spirit of service Jesus had modeled and the results that flow from it. God had intended for them to not fish for fish, but fish for souls of men. Jesus is teaching the mission and spirit of service. For the sake of human lives and souls, which are more precious than anything else in the world. When we establish a relationship with Jesus and confess Him with our lips. To have a personal relationship with Jesus.
This can only happen if we have fellowship and a relationship with God the Father and Jesus the Son. It is extremely important to have a personal relationship with Him. He knows us and loves us and cares for us if he did not, he would not have chosen us to accomplish any tasks for Him or His Kingdom. Just as Jesus choose these twelve, He has also chosen some of us to do the work for his people right where you are.
We also see that Jesus was providing for each one of them by giving them provision a “multitude of fish”. Furthermore, by giving them a “vast catch of fish,” Jesus conveyed the truth of the Gospel: “Let anyone who believes come to Me.”
Jesus prepares for them a fire too. The Fire refines; Jesus represents forgiveness, restoration, and the love of the resurrection toward His disciples. He kindled a charcoal fire for them (forgiveness), and prepared fish (restoration) and bread (resurrection).
Do you love Jesus, who gives and desires to give the bread of life to us all?
Furthermore, Jesus asks them to bring some of the fish they have caught. They are bringing their offering to God. A fellowship meal…
As we jump down to the 12th Verse, we see Jesus asks them and said “Come and Dine” he was about to impart great wisdom and knowledge to these men of Galilee. Amen! This can only happen if we have fellowship and a relationship with God the Father and Jesus the Son. It is extremely important to have a personal relationship with Him. He knows us and loves us and cares for us if he did not, he would not have chosen us to accomplish any tasks for Him and His Kingdom. Just as Jesus choose these twelve, He has chosen some of us to do the work for his people right where you are.
John 21:15 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs.
Notice that when Jesus asks, “Do you love Me?” for the sake of the Gospel, He uses the humble and the obedient, and He begins with those who have little experience. Lambs represent youth, and inexperienced first.
John 21:16 He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
As we grow in faith and understand God word more, we will be able to move to another level just as a child does not remain a child he grows to a teenager.
John 21:17 He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.
Finally, we come to the adults they also need to be taught the word of God, and this completes the learning process. Just as Jesus fed the disciple we are to follow the example Jesus laid out fro us all
John 21:18 Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
We will all go through the same process if we are to become disciples of Jesus no one can avoid it.
John 21:19 This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.
Follow Jesus and we will be rewarded by his provisions.
John 21:20Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee?
None of these betrayed Jesus only Judas did. They were still worthy to complete the work Jesus called them to do.
John 21:21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do?
Peter said, “Use me, Lord!” Will you commit to this today? Come to Him today! Be used by God to accomplish his will not yours!
John 21:22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.
Jesus said don’t worry about my return or when it is just following my instructions anything less than 100% obedience is still disobedience to God.
Do you love the Bible, which teaches us about a precious life through God’s grace?
Jesus says to you and I also Feed my lambs, Feed my sheep, Feed my sheep. Lovest thou Me?
Do you love Jesus? Follow Him!
Do you love God’s Word? Follow His Word!
Do you love the Holy Spirit? Let Him Lead you!
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Amen!
