Hosanna Hosanna!
This is the account of the Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Jesus speaks to his disciples and tells them of what must take place when he enters Jerusalem, they still don’t really clearly understand him, even though it was foretold in book of Zechariah. It is also mentioned in all four gospels.
They were focused on the rule and reign, where will we sit next to you Lord?
Zechariah 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
colt the foal= young male donkey- used by merchants and travelers and those in ministry. Jesus was a young male; his ministry was three short years. Jesus brought salvation to them.
Prophet Zechariah foretold this event to the Children of Israel. He told them of Jesus the King. He came as King of Humility & King of Peace. King of Kings and Lord of Lords He would have salvation for them even down the animal he would be riding on. He would come into Jerusalem as king and leave the Lord of Sacrifice. His rule will be just, and he gives them free salvation. Why did the Pharisees & Sadducees & scribes not understand this? This was foretold.
Their focus was not on the signs before them and the things that were occurring around them.
Mark 11:1 And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples,
Bethany = house of sorrows, where those with leprosy lived and gathered.
Bethphage = house of first fig tree, a fig tree yields 2 to 5 harvest, many could eat from the trees. The poor would have some food provided for them.
The week of sorrows that Jesus would go through was about to start. This shows the Sovereignty of God, fruitfulness, first fruits and provision all on display. Providing for them.
Jesus came to seek and save that which was lost for the weak the poor and lowly and the meek.
Mark 11:2 And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him. We must bring our sin to Jesus in order to obtain salvation. Confession and repentance.
colt tied= held in bondage to his master, or held in bondage to our sin.
Jesus told two of them to go to the village near you and you will find a donkey and a colt tied together bring them to me. If they were to be noticed, they were to say to them “The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them.” And immediately they would freely be released to them.
The colt was tied, symbol of bondage, Jesus wanted it to be freed.
Are you tied to something that you need to be freed from?
Jealousy, strife, envy, power, hatred, pleasure?
Jesus wants to help you and free you!
Before you can be used of God you must be freed from your bonds of sin!
Before the colt can be used of God it must be freed from its bonds.
Jesus gave them the answer to the tasked that need to be complete.
whereon never man sat = An animal that has never been ridden on needs to be broken, this is what a cowboy does they break the horses will so it can be ridden. We are just like this our will must be broken so we can be used of God.
Mark 11:3 And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither.
Jesus knew right where to send them and the exact spot they would find the colt, and that it had never been ridden.
As Jesus and his disciples started their entry in to Jerusalem we must address a few items of importance.
One; His disciples and the Jewish people were expecting a powerful looking warrior king to enter in and rule and reign. A King like David.
Two; His disciples and the Jewish people were expecting him to be riding a horse, a symbol of authority. A knight in shining armor to come boldly in with power and authority and rid them of the burden of Roman rule. The expectation of people clearly on display when we don’t get our way, or it is not what we expect we get upset don’t we. Remember God thoughts are not my thoughts, and my thoughts are not Gods.
Third His disciples and the Jewish people were expecting him at the main gate not the sheepgate where all the sacrifices were to enter the city. Had those men that were learned about scripture and the law Pharisees & Sadducees & scribes had actually read and learned the words of God they would not have focused on the killing of Jesus they would have welcomed him. Sheepgate clear sign.
Mark 11:4,5,6 confirms verse 3.
Jesus knew this would occur as he had said earlier.
Mark 11:7And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him.
They sat Jesus upon a colt and started their entrance to Jerusalem, and the multitude became excited. They all treated Jesus the way he should have been treated all along the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Surprisingly an extremely calm colt.
Mark 11:8 And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way.
Mostly palm branches were used. This is like the red-carpet treatment for our dignitaries. Besides the Kings entrance would be the main gate not the sheep gate.
Mark 11:9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
Yelling Hosanna! Hosanna! Hosanna! Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord! This crowd was excited to see their King. They were expressing their Joy.
The Greek word Hosanna = comes from Hebrew origin (yasha) which means oh save!
This is a clear representation of the Kingdom that they were waiting for.
Mark 11:10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
Yelling Hosanna in the highest! Hosanna in the highest!
Their problem is with they / we did not let this joy last for very long. Short term memory.
Owe how quickly we forget in just one short week these same people will be yelling Crucify him! Crucify him! Crucify him!
To spite all our downfalls God still has a tender and compassionate heart to love his own creation. Jesus came to Give them Salvation and a way back to a living God. “I am the way”.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
