The phrase “And it came to pass” appears 453 times in the King James Version of the Bible, specifically in the Old Testament. It is a common narrative connector used to introduce new events or sections of a story. While the phrase is less frequent in other translations, it is a prominent feature of the King James Version. It is often used in historical narratives and less frequently in poetic or prophetic writings.
This phrase “it came to pass” doesn’t come into being until Genesis chapter 4, showing us that the phrase is tied to time and death.
Genesis 4:3 And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD.
The next time we see it is in verse eight.
Genesis 4:8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
The act of committing murder can be seen in the family of Adam, the first human being. As long as sin is in us, sin will not cease, and the sin conceived through sin will remain in greater sin. If we live in this continuous chain of sin, we will all fall into injustice, not to mention destruction and the struggle for death. Why is that?
Sin is breaking God’s laws. The essence of sin is disobedience to God’s word. Sin is blasphemy against God, and it is an infringement on His authority.
Because Adam not only brought sin into the world, and his action separated us from God and from Paradise. We were banished from the Garden of Eden and faced the consequences of suffering, toil, and death. We no longer have access to the Tree of Life. We will not live together forever, defeating death, in our own ability.
God had proclaimed through his prophets that he would send many Old Testament deliverers – Noah, Moses, Joseph, and David for all humankind and He did. Then it came to pass when Jesus was born, walked the earth teaching God’s ways for all humankind.
In a testimony meeting in the Southern Church, a Christian woman got up and said that she was always blessed by the words “And it came to pass.” This baffled most people, but she went on to say “When I was upset by troubles. I go to the Bible, and I never get far before I read ’It came to pass.’ And I say, “Bless the Lord it didn’t come to stay—it came to pass!” Can I get an Amen!
We to can have this same testimony as this woman; with all our trials and tribulation we go through on daily basis. We can relate to this… That is why we need to reflect on all the times and things that the Lord has done for us. God said to us “And it came to pass.” And most definitely we do not want any troubles or trial to stay long in our lives we want them to be temporary. Amen!
We recognize this when it comes to how swiftly life passes. Life may seem to drag on and on to a child, but soon we have an appreciation of how rapid time passes us by. The Bible describes the shortness of life by comparing it to a vapor, like the morning fog that disappears so rapidly.
James 4:14 Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.
Life truly comes to pass! Our sorrow and tears also come to pass too.
David, wrote in the Old Testament Psalm about God wiping away our tears? God does not forbid sorrow, but He forbids sorrowing like those who have no hope. David’s life had many times of grief and sorrow, but we must not forget that he said, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.”
Psalm 30:5 For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.
Temptation is another thing which comes to pass. Think of how life would be if there were never any relief from those agonizing times when we are tempted to do wrong. When you commit a sin, it tempts you to destroy something. It first destroys oneself, then destroys the family, the nation or society, the church, and even leads to sins that defame friends and family. Remember that such temptations are fleeting, and do not take the lead in promoting sin and evil. Do not fall into false testimony with a lying tongue, a heart that devises evil plans, or innocent words. Temptation to commit wrongdoing destroys my soul. Consider how life would be if you could find no comfort in times of suffering. Yet how comforting are the words of James, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
And we must realize that God has never tempted anyone the tempter is none other than Satan himself. We must be wise to the tempters snare and realize that it is there to make us fall from grace that God has already promised us. The tempter may come, but God will give us the way to escape the trials.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Amen!
